School screening programme FAQs

Good vision is essential for a child’s education, development, and overall well-being. However, millions of children around the world struggle with undiagnosed vision problems, which can impact their learning and quality of life. At Al Basar, we are committed to changing this by providing free school screenings in communities where access to eye care is limited.
Where are the school screenings conducted?
Our school screenings primarily take place in Nigeria, Bangladesh and Sudan, three countries where the need for medical aid is particularly high. These regions have a significant number of vulnerable children who lack access to regular eye check-ups and treatment. Through these screenings, we aim to detect vision problems early and provide necessary interventions to prevent further complications.

How are locations selected?
Selecting the right location for our school screenings is a crucial step in ensuring maximum impact. Our local teams conduct a comprehensive needs assessment, identifying areas with a high prevalence of eye diseases and a significant number of children in need. Based on these assessments, schools are carefully chosen to ensure that those most at risk receive timely eye care.
How many children are screened?
Each school screening programme examines hundreds of children, depending on the size of the school. Our dedicated teams of eye care professionals work efficiently to ensure that as many children as possible receive the care they need within the available time and resources.
How much does a school screening cost?
Providing a school screening is a simple yet impactful way to change a child’s future. The cost of screening each child is just £2.50 – a small amount that can make a huge difference in detecting and addressing vision problems early. With early diagnosis and intervention, children can perform better in school, experience a higher quality of life, and look forward to a brighter future.
