Advancing Eye Care: Corneal Transplants in Nigeria
On May 8, 2024, the first batch of corneas arrived at Makkah Eye Hospital in Kano, Nigeria. These corneas are intended for transplantation to patients who require them, marking a significant milestone for eye care in the country. The surgical procedures will be performed by Dr. Adel Abdulaziz Al-Rashood, a renowned ophthalmologist and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Al Basar International Foundation.
Dr. Abdelmonem El-Sissi, the Regional Director of Al Basar International Foundation in Africa, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to providing comprehensive ophthalmic services in Nigeria. The establishment of the corneal transplant department is a crucial addition to the foundation’s medical work, especially as it is the first of its kind in Nigeria.
The first operations will be performed by Dr. Adel Al-Rashoud in the presence of the Kano State Governor to inaugurate the new department. Dr. El-Sissi expressed gratitude that the corneas have arrived and are ready for transplantation. The medical team is fully prepared to begin this specialized field, aiming to meet the needs of numerous patients who require these procedures and contribute to restoring their vision and alleviating their suffering.
It is worth noting that corneal transplantation is a vital procedure used by doctors to restore visual function in patients with corneal damage. Additionally, corneal transplants can alleviate pain and address other symptoms associated with corneal diseases.
