Our Impact in Mauritania

For thousands of people across Mauritania, vision loss means more than an eye condition - it means losing independence, livelihoods, and precious moments with loved ones. Through Al Basar’s outreach programme, hope was brought directly to communities where access to eyecare is limited, changing lives one patient at a time.

The Impact in Numbers

Across three locations in Mauritania, our dedicated medical teams delivered over 8,107 eye screenings, 1,015 sight-restoring cataract operations and 2,313 pairs of prescription glasses.

Behind every number is a story of someone seeing clearly again.

Restoring More Than Sight

For many patients, cataracts had gradually stolen their ability to work, read, recognise faces, or move around safely. Some had spent years living in darkness, believing their blindness was permanent.

Thanks to 1,015 cataract surgeries, individuals were given the chance to see their families again, return to work, and regain their independence. In just a matter of minutes, lives were transformed.

Reaching the Unreached

Many of the people screened during the outreach programme had never received an eye examination before. By bringing services directly into underserved communities, our teams were able to identify eye conditions early and provide treatment before vision loss became irreversible.

More than 8,000 people received vital eye screenings, offering hope and access to care where it was needed most.
