Retinopathy is a form of eye disease that affects that retina of the eye. There are four major types of retinopathies: diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, central serous retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. The most common form found in patients is diabetic retinopathy.
Some of the causes include high blood sugar that affects the eyes blood vessels, long term high blood pressure, stress, and premature birth of babies.
Symptoms depend on the type of retinopathy and include gradual worsening of vision, pain or redness in the eye, swelling of the eyes and vision changes.
Treatment includes eye surgery to remove blood or scar tissue from the eye, laser treatment, eye injections and corticosteroids.
